The Huntington Library’s encyclopedic collection includes a number of significant sixteenth- and seventeenth-century publications by wunderkamer curator/scholars. These include, Ulisse Androvandi’s “Patricii Bononiensis Musaeum Metallicum: in Libros IIII Distributum” (1648); Ole Worm’s “Historia Animalis quod in Norvagia Quandoque è Nubibus Decidit” (1653); and Petri Andreae “Matthioli’s Compendium de Plantis Omnibus” (incorporating Francesco Calzolari’s collection of pharmaceutical plants). The Huntington also has a copy of the British Museum’s “Museum Britannicum: Being an Exhibition of a Great Variety of Antiquities and Natural Curiosities,” published more than a century later in 1778.
